Black-backed jackal (Cania mesomelas) carrying a piece of a carcass. This dog, also known as the silver-backed jackal, is a scavenger that feeds on the remains of kills made by lions and other large predators. It also feeds on small rodents, insects and fruit. It is found either living alone, in pairs or in packs on the open plains of southern and eastern Africa. Photographed in the Masai Mara reserve, Kenya.
