But, as ourreaders are doubtless aware, the Aroostook war was an almost entirely bloodless struggle in spiteof its formidable name, and the early annals of Fort Fairfield are happily free from the stain of anyblood other than that of the bears, wolves, catamounts and other varmints that disputed the effortsof the pioneer settlers to establish a home in the wilderness. The fort was named in honor of JohnFairfield who was governor at the time of its erection. The history of the township covers a periodof just about three-quarters of a century, the first settlements having been made about 1816 by peoplefrom the adjacent province of New Brunswick, but for all practical purposes the birth of the town 56 HISTORICAL SKETCH OF FORT occurred in 1858, for it was incorporated March 11th of that year, having at that time just aboutdoubled the population of 401 which it had at the beginning of the decade, or in 1850. In 1860 thepopulation had increased to 901 and an even larger proportionate gain was made from 1860 to 1870 inspite of the deterring influences of the civil war, Fort Fairfields population in 1870 amounting to 1, succeeding decade witnessed another pronounced gain, the population in 1880 having been 2,807,and the 1890 census gives the town a population of 3,526, so it will be seen that its progress is con-stantly upward and onward.
