Solar silhouette view, looking towards the Osorno Volcano, of two artificial swans on the dark waters of Lake Llanquihue, Chile

Three Andean stratovolcanoes are visible from the lake waters in this view: Tronador, to the right; the classic cone of Volcan Osorno, whose upper slopes are covered in glaciers, due to the substantial snowfall in the moist maritime climate of the region, in the centre; and the sharp-pointed summit, due to glacial dissection, of Volcan Puntiagudo, to the left. Stratovolcanoes, composed of andesite lava, ash and pumice, are common in subduction zones, where oceanic crust is drawn down under a continent. The artificial swans in the view are seen from the lake shore at the village of Llanquihue ('Yankiway'), north of Puero Varas.
