CULTURE.—The Onion thrives best in a rather deep, rich, loamy soil, and,unlike most vegetables, succeeds well when cultivated on the same ground forsuccessive years. The best culture requires that the ground be deeply trenchedand manured the previous autumn, and laid up in ridges during the winter,to pulverize. As early in the spring as the ground is in working order, com-mence operations by leveling the ground with a rake and tread it firmly; sowthinly in drills about one-fourth of an inch deep, and 1 foot apart; cover withfine soil, and press down with the back of a spade or a light roller.
