The doctrines and theinfluence of the teachers gave a coimnon faith to the hardy and intrepidpopulation of the upper part of the Punjab, and merged whatever distinctiveappellations they previously possessed in the new general designation ofSikhs, or disciples, which thenceforth became their national denomi-nation. As their numbers increased, they attracted the notice of the Moham-medan rulers, and were subjected to the ordeal of persecution.
