He was in the em-ploy of Otis Sayles & Son, manufacturers of cottongoods, until August 17, 1861, when he enlisted asprivate in Company D, Fourth R. I. Infantry, andwas promoted to Second Lieutenant October 2,1861, and presented with a sword by the citizens ofGlocester. He was promoted to First LieutenantNovember 20,1861, and to Captain August 2, took part with his regiment in the operationsunder General Burnside in North Carolina, in the. WALTER A. READ. READ, Walter Allen, dealer in general mer-chandise, was born July 6, 1842, in Blackstone,Mass., the son of Thomas Jenks and Sarah (Burton)Read. His ancestors were English and emigrated operations under General McClellan before Rich-mond, in General Popes campaign, at Antietam, atFredericksburg, and joined General Peck at Suffolk,when besieged by General Longstreet. He servedunder General Butler at Fortress Monroe until MEN OF PROGRESS. 63 June 1864, and then joined the forces underGeneral Grant operating against Richmond. Hewas in the battle of the Mine, when the regimentlost nearly half of its numbers. He was the seniorCaptain and commander of the regiment after thebattle of the Mine until it was disbanded in Provi-dence, October 15,1864. After the war he associatedhimself with Augustus F.
