Queen Elizabeth II and The Prince Philip in the Ivory Mounted Phaeton. "Trooping the Colour" 2010
Queen Elizabeth II and The Prince Philip leading the Royal Procession onto Horse Guards Parade. In 58 years, The Queen has attended every single parade, except 1955, when there was a national rail strike. The Royal carriage, called the "Ivory Mounted Phaeton", had been built for Queen Victoria in 1842. The head coachman, Jack Hargreaves, is riding "Martha", the hand horse is "Daniel". Behind, on horseback, the Royal Colonels - The Princess Royal, The Duke of Kent, and The Prince of Wales. This photo was taken with a Canon 1D Mk IV and a Canon 600mm/f4 lens, the focus is on Her Majesty, all other persons are out of focus. "Trooping the Colour" is a traditional military ceremony going back to the 17th century. The "Colour" (the regimental flag) is presented (trooped) to the soldiers, so they could remember their flag, usually a rallying point, in the heat of battle. Since 1748 the parade also marks the official birthday of the British Sovereign, so it is "The Queen's Birthday Parade", held every second Saturday in June. All the above is based on information from the official programme, the web site , the BBC productions "Trooping the Colour" 2008-2010 and "For Queen and Country", and Wikipedia.
