A portrait of Mary Gunning, later Maria Coventry, Countess of Coventry ( 1733 – 1760) a famous Irish beauty and London society hostess at the time of King George II. Despite warnings from her husband not to use cosmetics, she died aged 27 from lead and mercury poisoning found in the make-up she wore constantly.
