Electrocardiography. French paramedic listening to the chest of a heart attack patient with a stethoscope. The patient is attached by electrodes to an electrocardiograh (ECG) machine. The electrodes measure the electrical activity of the heart. Heart abnormalities produce a characteristic electrical pattern, which is recorded by an ECG machine onto a chart called an electrocardiogram. An ECG is commonly used to monitor the heart following a heart attack. The French medical emergency service is called the Service d'Aide Medicale Urgente (SAMU).
