Abstract for the updated March 1989 (here dated May 1990) proposal by British physicist Tim Berners-Lee (born 1955) for the World Wide Web (WWW). Between 1989 and 1994, working at CERN (the European particle physics laboratory), Berners-Lee and Robert Cailliau developed the web, a global network for information sharing based on hypertext documents ('hypertext' is mentioned at lower left). In 1994, Berners-Lee founded the Web Consortium W3C, the International Web standards body of which he is the director. He was knighted in 2004. For the original March 1989 proposal, see image C024/3260.
