Statue of Jan Zamoyski, with the Zamoyski Palace beyond, Zamosc, Malopolska, Poland.

The original splendid palace was ruined by the Russians, who adapted it for military purposes. The town was the brain child of Zamoyski (1542-1605), who was Grand Hetman and Chancellor of Poland, and decided to create a Renaissance city, cultural and trading centre in a fortress in the Lublin Upland. He commissioned the Italian architect from Padua, Bernardo Morando, to design the project, which commenced in 1580. During the Second World War the Nazis occupied the town and renamed it Himmlerstad.
