Pilgrims making their way down from Drolma Pass (5640m), the highest point of the trek around Mt Kailash, Tibet Autonomous Region, China

Drolma La is the Tibetan name of Goddess Parvati, wife of Lord Shiva whose abode is believed to be at Mount Kailash. It is said that one can cross the pass only if the Goddess bestows her grace upon the traveler. Mount Kailash (also Kailasa or Gang Rinpoche) is a 6,638m high peak in the Kailash Range (Gangdise Mountains), which forms part of the Transhimalaya in the Ngari Prefecture. It is considered to be sacred and is a major pilgrimage site in 4 religions: Hinduism, Bon, Buddhism, and Jainism. In Hinduism, it is traditionally recognized as the abode of Shiva, while it is believed to Mount Meru in Buddhist texts.
