The grave of John Ruskin, who died at his home, Brantwood, of influenza on 20 Jan 1900. His grave is marked with a large carved cross made from green slate from the local quarry at Tilberthwaite. The cross was carved by Miles, to a design by Collingwood, who was an expert on Anglo-Saxon crosses, with symbols depicting important aspects of Ruskin's work and life. The image shows the South side of the cross and depicts celtic knots and swastika; the Parable of the Vineyard, for 'Unto This Last'; lilies, for 'Sesame and Lilies'; angel and key. for Fors Clavigera'; wreath and knot and at the top, Saint George for 'The Guild'.
