St. Marks, Bangalore.—After the capture of Seringapatamand the destruction of the power of Tippoo Sultan, a consider-able force was left in the State of Mysore to overawe thecountry. At first the headquarters of the force were atSeringapatam itself, and there were detachments at Bangalore,Nundidroog, Eayapett, Mysore, and some other forts in thecountry. The whole province is a tableland about 3000 feetabove the level of the sea. It was anticipated that every fortwould be a health station for the British troops of the Madrasarmy. But in this hope the authorities were itself soon proved to be a most unhealthy station ; yk;eJ. CE o -J<oz< TOIO h O ijj X CHURCHES BUILT BETWEEN 1805 AND 1815 69 the detached forts here and there were little better; so that itbecame necessary for the military authorities to choose a newspot for a camp, supply it with drains and sanitary appliances,and build barracks such as the troops could live in withoutdanger to their bodily health. They pitched upon an undulating piece of ground aboutone mile from the Fort of Bangalore. Lieutenant JohnBlakiston of the Madras Engineers prepared the plans of thenew cantonment; and when they were approved, he set to workand completed in less than a year barracks for two regimentsof Europeans, five regiments of native infantry and artillery,besides hospitals, magazines, and other requirements.
