James 'Jim' Arthur Lovell (born 1928), US astronaut. Lovell was a military pilot and test pilot, joining NASA's Astronaut Corps in 1962. He flew on the Gemini 7 and Gemini 12 missions of 1965 and 1966. He then made history as part of the Apollo 8 crew, the first humans to reach and orbit the Moon, doing so from 24 to 25 December 1968. Lovell was then commander of Apollo 13 in April 1970. This mission to the Moon suffered a near-fatal mishap before returning safely. Lovell retired from NASA in 1973, later working in business administration. Photographed in June 2011, at the Starmus Festival, the Canary Islands.
