Twisted shard of metal shrapnel, now displayed on windowsill in Parish Church of Saint Laurence at Hawkhurst, Kent, England, UK, is remnant of German V1 flying bomb that exploded in the churchyard in August 1944, during the Second World War, blowing out much ancient stained glass and causing extensive further damage. Although the church was not fully repaired until 1957, pieces of the shattered glass were later made into a new roundel and it also benefited from donations of ancient glass from elsewhere.
Hawkhurst, Kent, England, United Kingdom: this twisted fragment of metal, now displayed on a windowsill in the Parish Church of Saint Laurence, is a shrapnel remnant of a German V1 flying bomb which exploded in the churchyard in August 1944, towards the end of the Second World War, blowing out much of the church’s ancient stained glass and causing extensive further damage which was not fully repaired until 1957. A few pieces of the shattered ancient glass were salvaged and painstakingly re-assembled into a new roundel and the church also benefited in the 1950s from donations of ancient stained and painted glass originally in other locations.
