A native of New Orleans, Pauline Cushman spent much time in the North and risked her life in the Secret Service for the Union. In May 1863, she was sent to Confederate lines to find out information about the Army of Tennessee. She was captured, tried, and sentenced to be hanged. In the hasty evacuation of Shelbyville in June, she was overlooked and escaped back to Union lines. The Union soldiers called her "Major." Her accurate knowledge of many roads in the south was of great importance to the commander of the Army of the Cumberland.
