Laysan Albatross chick with droopwing, a neurological disorder caused by ingestion of lead in paint chips from an abandoned building.

The building in the background has been fenced off to prevent further access by the albatross chicks and in preparation for remediation to remove the lead. The building was built by the Commercial Pacific Cable Company on Midway Atoll in the early 1900s when they established the final link of a global communication system.
