The Number of Interruptions can be increased up to about 12,000per minute. By means of a resistance switch on the s\Ndtchboard the motorcan be rmi fast or slow, and further, it is possible to run the motor at anydesired speed, thus obtaining any number of interruptions up to the limitof the mechanism. Causes of Defective WorJiing.—A few short hints on the causes of defectiveworking may be of assistance to workers. If when switching on the motor itdoes not start up, the speed regulator should be at once cut out, and then themotor having started, it can be brought back to the position of usual Fig. 16.—Centrifugal motor mercury interrupter.(Cavendisli Electrical Co.) INTERRUPTERS—CAUSES OF DEFECTIVE WORKING 29 There also may be an interruption or short circuit in the main cable leadingto the switchboard or table, or the cables leading to the motor of the inter-rupter may have become loosened, or the brushes and their screws may havebecome loose, all of which faults would be indicated by the motor refusingto start. If the commutator starts to spark after running some time it willbe found that this is generally due to oil and carbon dust, and this must beremoved by cleaning the commutator with fine emery cloth, and also cleaningthe carbon brushes. If when the coil is now switched on we observe nohght in the X-ray tube, this may be due to the fuse having been burntthrough or become loosened. Great care must be taken to see that allbearing contacts are clean, that all cables are perfect, and that all termmalsare absolutely secure. Shou
