Withlaudable modesty Brodhurst acknowledges hisindebtedness to Guerin and Lonsdale for the ideaof unbending spinal curves; to Mr. Evrard heaccords his share in the construction. Kow, gentlemen, in placing this apparatus ) before you, it may seem as if it did not differfrom the usual spinal supporters. A closer inspec-tion can not, however, fail to arrest your attentionwith reference to some material modifications andalterations of the usual type. There is the belt, the pad, and the crutches, asin others. You notice, however, that the crutchesare connected with a cross-band which givesan unusual degree of firmness to the apparatus. • On L«teral Carvalure of theCharchllLt Page W. Jb. Spine. London John. Again, whilst in most others, the dorsal brace isstationary, the lever in Brodhursts instrumentmoves on a pivot with great power, actuating sim-ultaneously the pad and shoulder-hoop, andthus operating in opposite directions. Whilst, therefore, the pad is brought to bear upon thedorsal curve through the ribs, the opposite shoulderis lifted and drawn to the other side, by which theweight of the spine is changed to the oppositeside. The modus operandi of the instrument istherefore equal to the antiplastic movement ofWerner, which in fact it renders permanent. From the value which we have attached to theantiplastic manipulation of the latter, you mayinfer our estimation of the practical utility of theapparatus. But in order not to overrate its ser-viceability, you should bear in mind, that it canonly affect the curves as long as the spine hasretained its flexibility. We have had oucasion to employ the apparatus Fig. SO.
