Kenrei-mon Gate for the most important visitors, Kyoto Imperial Palace, Kyoto, Japan


The current Kyoto Imperial Palace was reconstructed in 1855 after it had burnt down and been moved around Kyoto many times over the centuries. It was the residence of the Imperial Family until 1868 when the capitol was moved from Kyoto to Tokyo. The Kenrei-mon Gate the main gate of the Kyoto Imperial Palace, originally used by the Emperor to visit to the Palace. It is now used on the occasion of the Emperor’s welcoming of senior foreign dignitaries.
