A late 19th Century illustration from the Book of Genesis of Esau leaving to hunt venison for his father, Isaac. Esau had become "a cunning hunter, a man of the field," and was his father's favourite, for "venison was in his mouth," , he was fond of it. Esau was the elder brother of Jacob, the patriarch of the Israelites. Esau was the favorite of his father, and Jacob, the favorite of his mother, both of whom used deception, motivated by his mother Rebekah, to lay claim to his, by then, blind father Isaac's blessing that was inherently due to the firstborn, Esau.
