Teens observing a giant old growth almond tree, Dipteryx panamensis, lowland rainforest, Chilamate, Costa Rica


This almond tree is estimated to be 600 years old. It is 54 meters (177 feet) high and 14 meters (46 feet) in circumference. Found in an old growth rainforest at Selva Verde, Chilamate, Costa Rica. The almond tree has been over harvested in Central America for wood. It is important habitat for many species including Great Green Macaws Image E3Y7AX shows a sapling of the species growing nearby
