Bone diaphysis, light micrograph. Yellow bone marrow is a less active form of bone marrow. Haematopoietic tissue, where precursors of blood cells are formed, is very scarce and is intermingled with abundant adipose (fat) cells. In the hematopoietic tissue the largest cells are megakaryocytes. The blood vessel at centre is the central longitudinal vein that returns newly formed blood cells from the marrow pool to the systemic circulation.
