II. 4 50 DISEASES OF THE PUERPERAL STATE. sels, and was covered with a coating of dark-colored blood, throughwhich, at scattered points, portions of the granular structure wereseen projecting, not colored like the rest, hut bearing to the nakedeye a marked resemblance to the valvular excrescences in the the right common iliac artery, some of the detached concretionswere found not covered with blood, but lying loose in the canal of. the vessels, and were there seen to be of a grayish color, and gra-nular appearance. The external iliac arteries on both sides wereoccupied by sanguineo-purulent matter, and here and there mixedwith this purulent matter were small granular concretions, similarto the granular mass above. On the right side, this inflammatoryappearance of the artery extended down as far as Pouparts liga- ARTERIAL OBSTRUCTIONS. 51 merit, but on the left side it reached two inches below Poupartsligament; and a small granular mass was found blocking up theorigin of the profunda on the left side. Two inches down the leftinternal iliac artery, a pulpy mass was found blocking up the ves-sel, and from this a yellowish pus extended upwards to the originof the artery.
