The corbelling under the parapethas a continuous moulded course at top and bottom, and two rows ofdetached corbels between. This structure evidently dates from the six-teenth century, and resembles several of the castles in North Ayrshire,illustrated in Vol. ill. TERRINGZEAN CASTLE, Ayrshire. The portion tinted black on Plan (Fig. 1458)represents an ancient castle, of which the tower rises in a very brokencondition to a height of 20 or 30 feet. It is built of large square stonesin ^es, with a double-splayed base. The tower is irregular in shape,and is a small structure, having a square apartment inside measuring about12 feet square. It has been vaulted, and the vault has had three the ground floor the tower enters from the courtyard by a narrowpassage through the wall, and from this passage a wheel-stair has led upto the upper floors and to the top of the walls.
