It is a very substantial af-fair, as one can see by examining thedimensions given. The chain, or, rather, scries of links and hangers which weshow, is used at the smoke box end. A heavy curved cross bar, with a5 1/16 in. hole, hangs from what one maycall the grab hook of one of the twoelectric overhead cranes used in theerecting shop, and from either end ofthis, there is a link about 3 ft. 8 ins. long, which terminates in an eye which takesa 3 N in- pm- From this pin, two links, each ij4 in. thick, 4 ins. wide and 18 , hang. Another 3 ,^f in. pin se-cures a single link 2^ ins. thick and 18ins. long and from this same sized pinagain depend two links 18 ins. long, eachlJ/$ ins. thick, and from the connectingpin of these, there is on each side ahook-shaped piece 2]^ ins. thick, whichpasses under the frame front and sograsps the front end FRONT END LINK CH.\IN FOR LIFTINGLOCOMOTIVES. The whole arrangement is strong andflexible and, one may say, durable, be-cause if the engine to be lifted happenedto be hot, no detriment to the chainwould take place, as is so often apparentwhen a sling rope is used. This rig isa permanent shop appliance that nevergrows old and does not wear out, and inthis respect it resembles the Deacons So RAILWAY AND LOCOMOTIVE ENGINEERING February, 1905. wonderful One hoss shay, as de-scribed by Oliver Wendall not in use it hangs quietly andmodestly from a suitable bracket on theshop wall and is always ready for busi-ness, though not looking for the same,as the captain of the Wayoflftown firebrigade said when called upon for aspeech in reply to the toast of Our FireFighters.
