This is the fmalleft fpecies of the Auk tribe found upon the Britiflicoafts^ and is alfo one of the leaft common. In point of fize itfcarcely exceeds the Ouzel; the length is nine inches. The prefentfigure is that of the female ; which is ver^^ fcarce. Alca Alle is an inhabitant of the icy regions of the north of Europe,and America^ from whence it migrates to the fouth in the winterfeafons; and in its return northward in the enfuing fummer a few re-main and breed in the north of Britain.
