CLUFF, Benjamin, first Bishop ofCenter Ward, Wasatch county. Utah,is the third son of David Cluff andBetsy Hall, and was born March 20,1830, in the town of Durham, Straffordcounty. New Hampshire. He was butan infant when his parents movedfrom his birthplace to Kirtland, Ohio,where the family became converts toMormonism. Benjamin distinctlyremembers the dedication of the Kirt-land Temple and the subsequent perse-cutions in Ohio. While the familystopped temporarily at Springfield, 111.,in the spring of 1839, Benjamin was. baptized in the Illinois river, and thefollowing year the family moved tcvNauvoo, instead of going to Missouri,for which State they had started fromOhio. As a young man Benjamin tookan active part in the upbuilding ofNauvoo,and remained there until thegeneral exodus of the Saints in journeying to the great west thefamily made halts at Bonaparte andMt. Pisgah, Iowa, the winter of 1846-47 being spent at the latter place. Afterthat two years were spent at CouncilBluffs and vicinity, and in June, 1850, 476 LATTER-DAY SAINT the family started on the long and tedi-ous journey to Great Salt Lake valley,where they arrived in the fall of thatyear.
