. Virginia, the Old Dominion, as seen from its colonial waterway, the historic river James, whose every succeeding turn reveals country replete with monuments and scenes recalling the march of history and its figures from the days of Captain John Smith to the present time . d, knowing that we shouldfind only a few ruins and one of the besttinick farms on the river. Landing from our shore-boat near the endof the bridge at a little cove that made inthrough a greenery of fox grape and wood-bine, we reached the road and started offthrough the woodland. It was a pleasantwalk among the fragrant pine trees and inthe soft light and the lengthening shadowsof the waning summer day. Abruptly thegrove ended, and thereafter the road ledacross a succession of marshy hollows andcleared ridges on its way to the other sideof the island. About midway in its courseit divided; one branch passing into a largeenclosure, the other making a detour aroundit. The enclosed land, twenty-three acres atthe southwest corner of the island, belongs tothe Association for tlie Preservation of Vir-ginia Antiquities. It was given to that so-ciety by the present owner of the island, E. Barney. Passing within the enclosure and followingthe caretaker, we approached with interest, 48.
