The Egyptians believed in Cosmic order. and measured time by the annual cycle of the Nile and the daily progress of the sun across the sky. This vignette from the Book of the Dead shows Ani in adoration of the scarab-headed Chepera, god of the rising Sun, sitting in the Solar Bark. The two dog-headed creatures (cynocephali), with arms outstretched are Isis and Nephthys, the Spirits of the Dawn, and their mission is to imprison or destroy all the enemies of the Light.
