Madonna and Child flanked by angels with arms folded, Duomo di Santa Maria Assunta on the Campo dei Miracoli at Pisa, Tuscany, Italy. Marble lunette of the Portale di San Ranieri or gate of San Rieri, once in the west façade but moved to the east side of the south transept after a fire in 1595.

Duomo di Santa Maria Assunta (Cathedral of Saint Mary of the Assumption), Pisa, Tuscany, Italy: marble lunette of the Portale di San Ranieri, bronze doors sculpted circa 1180 by Bonanno Pisano. Both the lunette and the bronze doors below were moved after a fire in 1595. The cathedral was founded in 1064 and consecrated in 1118. It was built in Pisan Romanesque style in two stages, one by architect Busketo (or Buscheto), who created the original layout, and one by Rainaldo, who extended the building and the façade. The building was not finally completed until the late 1300s, with Gothic additions. The elliptical dome, designed by Busketo and decorated around 1380 by Piccio di Landuccio, is inspired by the great Byzantine domes, primarily that of Santa Sofia (Turkey).
