. The railroad and engineering journal . n. The small cylin-der projecting backward beyond the tire of the first was necessary to cut the cylinder-head at the side, asshown in the accompanying illustrations. In these drawings fig. 1 is a section of the cylinders andsteam-chest ; fig. 2 a side view or elevation of the cylindercasting ; figs. 3 and 4 show the crosshead ;^fig. 5_is aview they have, in •fact, been increased to per cent, of itsarea. The two useless spaces of the large cylinder canthus be made very small ; the back space is small in anyevent, while the forward space can be diminished by mov-ing the steam-chest slightly forward of the center. In thisengine the area of these spaces was 7 per cent, of that ofthe cylinder. The size adopted for the compound cylinders was diameter lor the small, and meter for the largecylinder, the stroke remaining meter. The ports ofboth cylinders have the same length, meter. A smallopening of the valve gives a sufficient area for the admis-. t:^^^^^g;^:7^7:TT--^j^X.^ of the back cylinder head, showing the arrangement ol theguides and the stuffing , while fig. 6 is a sketch of thelocomotive, showing its general arrangement. The valvegear used is the link motion with the solid link, which isvery commonly used in France. The steam-chest is placed above the two cylinders, asshown in fig. i ; there is a single valve moving on a valveface having five ports. The two outside ports communicatewith the high-pressure or small cylinder ; the two interme-diate with the low-pressure or large cylinder, while thecentral port is the exhaust. The exhaust port is in the sion of steam to the small cylinder, while for the largecylinder the valve adopted gives really a double opening. The valve, which is of bronze, has a rectangular form onthe face, but above it is cylindrical, and a groove turnedin the cylindrical part receives two segments of cast ring of cast iron carefully bored out is
