The shellrebounded from the plate about two hundredfeet, and struck in front of the gun from whichit was fired. But the maximite, lacking its ownspecial fuse, did not explode. One of the most important parts of the pro-jectile is the detonating fuse or cap — that is,the part that explodes first and which in turnexplodes the charge within the shell.
