NPP satellite preparations. The NPP (NPOESS Preparatory Project) is an earth observation satellite designed to bridge the gap between the current EOS (Earth Observing System) and the future JPSS (Joint Polar Satellite System) scheduled for 2016. The JPSS resulted from the restructuring of the NPOESS. The NPP carries five instruments. It was launched on 28 October 2011 from Vandenberg Air Force Base, California, USA, on a Delta II rocket. Here, technicians are monitoring the rocket faring being placed around the satellite. This will protect it during the ascent to orbit and will be jettisoned once outside the Earth's atmosphere.
