Menstrual pain. Artwork of female reproductive organs with barbed wire within the uterus (upper right) representing the pain of dysmenorrhoea. The vagina and cervix are at lower right. At upper left is one of the fallopian tubes and ovaries (with developing egg cells). Dysmenor- rhoea, or painful menstruation, is suffered by about 75% of women at some time in life. It is usually a cramp-like pain in the lower abdomen, which may come and go in waves and is sometimes accompanied by vomiting. Primary dysmenorrhoea affects young women and disappears by about age 25. Secondary dysmenorrhoea begins in adult life and is due to an underlying disorder.
