Small hive beetle (Aethina tumida) larva. This beetle is a pest of bee colonies. The larvae cause the most damage, feeding on pollen, honey and the bee brood, and contaminating the honey with yeast that causes it to ferment. It is native to sub-Saharan Africa, but has spread to North America and Australia, where it is having a significant impact on honey bee colonies.
