James McKeen Cattell (1860-1944), US psychologist. Cattell carried out his graduate studies in Germany, later becoming the first professor of psychology in the USA, at the University of Pennsylvania. His work helped establish psychology as a science. Cattell later worked at Columbia University, where he was dismissed for opposing US involvement in World War I. He also edited and published journals, including Psychological Review and Science. Photographed at the Marine Biological Laboratory, Woods Hole, Massachusetts, USA.
