St John's Smith Square. West front; by Thomas Archer between 1713 and 1728.

St John Smith Square. One of the 'Fifty New Churches' or 'Queen Anne Churches'. The west front with giant pilasters of the Doric order, and two of the corner towers. Built in the Baroque style by Thomas Archer between 1713 and 1728. Charles Dickens heartily disliked St John's: in Our Mutual Friend he describes it as 'a very hideous church with four towers at the four corners, generally resembling some petrified monster, frightful and gigantic, on its back with its legs in the air'.
