Embryonic development, historical artwork. This shows the process of gastrulation, where cells at one position on the embryo start to move inwards forming a tube. The cells then differentiate into the 3 germ layers; the ectoderm (outer), endoderm (inner) and mesoderm (middle). Illustration by Ernst Haeckel, published in the 1891 edition of his Anthropogenie.
