Cases of abortion occur too frequently in thiscommunity, and, strange as it may seem, most ofthem among the married, brought on in many in-stances to avoid having large families. These casesare, in general, attended with more flooding andgreater prostration, and a much larger proportion ofdeaths than follow confinement at the full term 216 THE SCIENCE OF THE SEXES. IX Chapter V, page 74 and following, we havealready presented 1018 cases, designed to showthe various ages at which menstruation is established ;and in the same chapter, pages 81-83, 96 cases toshow the ages to which it is prolonged. Anotherinteresting view of this distinguishing function ofthe female system, is the ease, or pain, or irregu-larity attending the establishment of menstruation. Dr. Bennet, when physician-accoucheur of theWestern General Dispensary of London—an insti-tution in which nearly 10,000 patients annually aretreated by its medical officers—very carefully pre-pared a synopsis of a large number of cases present-ing uterine symptoms. From these, with greatlabor, and especially to illustrate our present sub-ject, we have selected out 255 cases, as below. Theterm pain
