STRESS, ARTWORK

The effects of stress on the organism - the resistance phase. During stress, physical or psychological, the organism reacts in three stages : the alarm phase (first reactions to agression with acceleration of cardiac rhythm and breathing), the resistance phase (adaptation of the organism when the stress persists) and the exhaustion phase (disease and death). Stress (red) activates the hypothalamus ; the later stimulates the hypophysis by the intermediary of corticostimuline. In response, the adenohypophysis produces ACTH (AdrenocorticoTropin Hormone or corticotrope hormone, green). The ACTH will stimulate the suprarenal glands to secrete adrenaline (through the medullosurrenal, yellow) and cortisol (or hydrocortisone, through the adrenocortical, blue). The release of the cortisol has an effect on the heart, the brain and an antalgic role. The cortisol also acts through a negative retrocontrol loop on the hypothalamus, in order to inhibit the production of ACTH. The adrenaline leads to an increase of the strength and frequency of heart contraction, it also favours the hydrolysis of the glycerids. See image 1167507 for a masculine silhouette.
