Agaricia agaricites reef coral underwater Abrolhos, Bahia, Brazil

This species forms colonies of varied shape and size, encrusting and with narrow and free edges. The calyces have sizes ranging from to mm and have an average of 16 septums. The columella is deep and barely visible. It is a reef species, photophyll and presents a certain sensitivity to the environmental variations with respect to the degree of luminosity and energy of the waters. Light-water forms and moderate energy exhibit relatively large sizes (up to 15 cm in diameter) and crusts with freer edges than those in bright and agitated environments, which have more or less globular shapes and are relatively small (some Few centimeters in diameter). The forms of environments with intermediate luminosity and energy present morphological characteristics that vary between the two forms mentioned. The color of the living colonies is commonly brownish green and sometimes light brown. This coral occurs from the reefs of the islands of the Fernando de Noronha Archipelago and the Atol das Rocas to the Abrolhos region, in waters with depths between 0 and 20 m and temperature around 27ºC.
