On Jan. 26, after an excitingstruggle, he was chosen by the Legislature of Ten-nessee, United States Senator in the forty-fourth Con-gress, and took his seat in that body, at the specialsession convened by President Grant, on the sth ofMarch. On the 27th of July, 1875, the ex-Presidentmade a visit to his daughters home, near CarterStation, Tenn. When he started on his journey, he wasapparently in his usual vigorous health, but on reach-ing the residence of his child the following day, wasstricken with paralysis, rendering him rallied occasionally, but passed away at2 , July 31, aged sixty-seven years.
