Corn-based plastic. Close-up of plastic pellets (clear) made from corn (Zea mays, top) starch. Sugar from corn is fermented to produce lactic acid which undergoes further reaction to yield long chain lactic acid molecules called polylactide (PLA). The plastic is biodegradable and can be used for both food and non food packaging as well as textiles and other materials.
