Coast Guard Officer Awarded Navy Cross. Coast Guard Commander Quentin R. Walsh of New London, Conn., was awarded the Navy Cross Thursday (March 15) for heroism and bravery during the assault on Cherbourg. The 35-year-old Coast Guard officer, who commanded a Navy reconnaissance party, engaged in Cherbourg street fighting, accepted the surrender of 750 Germans, and secured the release of 52 American paratroopers held prisoners by the Nazis. Presentation of the Navy's highest award was made by Assistant Secretary of the Navy Struve H. Hensel on behalf of the President.
