View ENE of Llech Idris standing stone, Merioneth, Wales, UK, the final marker on a Bronze Age trackway leading from the coast near Harlech to Moel Goedog & over the N end of the Rhinog range to Maen Llwyd SE of Trawsfynydd. This ancient route avoided the wet lowlands which were difficult to cross before modern drainage, & gave access to the mountainous country which became particularly important for metal trading nomads in the later Bronze Age. The valley of the Afon Gain is to the rear. Local folklore states this is the stone (slate) of the giant Idris Gawr who threw it from the summit of Cadair Idris over ten miles to the south. Other local stories tell of the metal-bearing rocks in the valley attracting thunder storms & how a girl carrying a basket of iron shears down from the hills behind the stone was killed by a lightning strike.
