Alba Picta. A pretty species from Brazil ; distinct in character. It is shrubby in habit and of compact growth ; the leaves are glossy- green, freely spotted with bright, silvery white. Argentea Guttata. A cross between Begonia Olbia and Alba Picta, with foliage of large size, of rich green, spotted with silver ; a beautiful variety. Metallica. A fine erect-growing variety, with dark, rough leaves ; the surface is a lustrous bronze-green ; veins depressed and dark red. Rubra. Dark green leaves, flowers scarlet rose, glossy and wax-like. Saundersoni. Scarlet flowers, dwarf habit ; .in bloom continually. Semperflorens Qigantea. The flowers of this sort are brilliant carmine red, borne in large panicles. The flowers are unusually large and brilliant, and stand well above the folige. (See cut. ) Thurstonii. A distinct and pretty shrubby variety, with thick, heavy foliage, which is of a rich metallic-green above and bright red underneath ; the flowers are of a fine pink, rising well above the foliage.
