In Lower Canada (now Quebec)rebellion broke out as well, due to irritation of the French atBritish rule. Both rebellions were easily crushed, but the Britishsent over an investigator. From that time on, it has beena matter of principle in British politics to give self-governmentto the colonies so far as can be done. The great regions to the west and north werelater developed by transcontinental railways and divided intoprovinces and territories and added to the union. So the Do-minion of Canada is a federation somewhat like the UnitedStates. It is greater in area than therepublic to the south ofit, and though much of it lies very far north there are vastplains growing millions of bushels of wheat in the northwest, and much mineral in its rocky and mountainous portions.
