Upper stories of traditional wooden Edo era ('samurai') houses in Kanazawa, Japan reflect the evening sun.

These houses are tea houses in Higashi Chaya Machi ( Higashi Chaya Gai and various related transliterations), one of the geisha areas of Kanazawa, the only city outside Kyoto to have an active geisha district. They were originally frequented by geisha as they carried out their entertainment duties, and are now a significant tourist attraction, especially for domestic tourists. The area is also known as a samurai area, as it was frequented by people of the samurai class during their era.
